16th January 2008

BALTIC

A BRIDGE + TUNNEL PRODUCTION
Last of the Dictionary Men:
Stories from the South Shields Yemeni Sailors
Wednesday 2 April – Monday 5 May 2008

Over the course of more than 100 years, thousands of seamen from Yemen settled in the small town of South Shields to work in the established maritime industry based on the rivers Tyne and Wear in the North East of England. Bridge + Tunnel Productions, over three years, worked with this community to create Last of the Dictionary Men, an exceptional multi-disciplined exhibition which highlights the complexities of Modern British identity. The exhibition will be on show at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art from Wednesday 2 April until Monday 5 May 2008.

Last of the Dictionary Men is a captivating exhibition documenting the lives and memories of a vital but little-known part of British immigrant history, the establishment of the UK’s oldest Muslim and Arab Community in South Shields, Tyne & Wear. Importantly this exhibition does not only bring attention to this particular small community, but it also offers new forms of representation; new ways of seeing, hearing and understanding the complexity of Muslim identities within Britain today.

The combination of large-scale oral history, photographic and film installations by artists Tina Gharavi and Youssef Nabil deliver charismatic insight into this small yet significant community. Today only 13 men from the first generation survive and their stories are told through this collection of works. Over the course of three years Bridge & Tunnel Productions collaborated with the seamen, to record their endangered stories and experiences and represent them in a new and challenging content. From the accounts of 800 Yemeni men from Tyneside who died at sea in World War II, to the misinterpretations of the Trade Union riots at the Customs House in the 1930s to the long forgotten wedding of Muhammad Ali in 1977 - Last of the Dictionary Men is an inspiring and unheard story of vital importance.

Tina Gharavi’s 14 oral history films are presented on individual television screens. Positioned at the real life height of each of the Yemeni men, they frankly narrate the stories of their lives, marriages and the living history of the subsequent four generations. Intricately hand-painted portraits by internationally renowned photographer, Youssef Nabil hang above only 13 of the 14 TV monitors, following the death of one of the gentlemen during the creative process.

The exhibition will be accompanied by The King of South Shields, a documentary on boxer Muhammad Ali’s extraordinary wedding in the South Shield mosque, directed by Tina Gharavi, Bridge & Tunnel Productions on show in the Level 1 cinema space.

REFLEX

REFLEX 0.4 Regional Short Film Showcase
At Cinemas across the north east
Tuesday 22nd January to Tuesday 11th March 2008

Now in its fourth programme Tyneside Cinema’s REFLEX Regional Short Film Showcase begins a tour of the region’s cinemas. The Newcastle and Gateshead – based cultural cinema tours more of the most exciting and innovative short films made in the North East, reflecting the diversity of the many talented filmmakers living and working in the region.

Audiences can enjoy the cream of what the region can offer at a series of specially-selected venues including Queen's Hall Arts Centre, Hexham, Gala Theatre, Durham, Darlington Arts Centre, Customs House, South Shields and Arc, Stockton-on-Tees.

This year’s REFLEX programme premiered at a sold-out public launch event in December at the Tyneside Cinema’s temporary home at the Old Town Hall, Gateshead. The programme includes work by filmmakers both established and new.

Richard Fenwick and Dan Elliott, who have been making short films in the region over the last five years, are currently developing their first features, whilst Guy Frankland and James McAleer are just making their move into directing.

REFLEX represents a chance for many directors to experience the benefits of not only having an audience see their hard work, but also learn from other filmmakers.

Julie Ballands, REFLEX programmer and producer says:

"Before REFLEX, there weren’t many opportunities to see films made here in the region on north east screens. Audiences enjoy the concept of REFLEX, and the films that are screened because they reflect the skills present in the region. For filmmakers young in their career, It’s an amazing and rare chance to watch their films with a live audience, and to gauge their reactions. So far, they’ve all been positive!"

Directors from the programme will be present at screenings in the tour, and there will be a chance for audiences to put questions to them about their work after the shows.

Ian Fenton, whose film Flickerman and The Ivory Skinned Woman featured in a previous Reflex tour says:

"It was great to be around an audience who were excited to be seeing original and local work on their doorstep. I’d be really happy to be involved in future Reflex events. As a filmmaker, I want to get my work seen, otherwise the whole thing is pointless, and to get the chance to meet people as they watch your work is fantastic."

REFLEX 0.4 (rated an advisory 15) tours venues across the north east of England between Tuesday 22nd January and Tuesday 11th March.

The programme is supported by Northern Film and Media, UK Film Council, Gateshead Council, Newcastle City Council and Procter & Gamble.

Reflex 0.4

TYNESIDE CINEMA Launch Event SUNDAY 2ND DECEMBER 6.00PM £5/£4 Advisory Certificate 15

Tyneside Cinema brings you its fourth local shorts programme, featuring more of the most exciting and innovative films being made right here in the North East. Reflex reflects the diversity of the many talented filmmakers living and working in the region. This year’s programme includes work by established filmmakers and Reflex regulars Richard Fenwick and Dan Elliott who, at the top of their award-winning short film game, are currently developing their first features. Richard Lawson and James McAleer have made the shift from cinematography to directing. And there is exciting, new work by young directors who are definitely names to watch out for. A panel discussion with directors from the programme will follow the screening and there will be a chance to put your questions to them.

Complimentary wine and soft drinks will be available in the interval.

The Programme:

The Making of Parts Dir. Daniel Elliott / 2006 / 15 mins.
A man's love and tenderness, which he once shared with his wife, is now slipping away from him. Dan Elliott’s film premiered at Venice Film Festival in 2006 where it was awarded the PRIX UIP Best European Short Film Award. It has since received more international awards and has screened at more than 50 festivals around the world.

Rabbit Stories Dir.Sean Conway / 2006 / 8 mins.
"Never trust a rabbit, they may look like a child’s toy, but they steal your crops" Rabbit Stories is a study of mental illness; a portrait of a young schizophrenic man called Fenton Fuller. Definitely a young filmmaker to look out for, Sean Conway has garnered critical acclaim from the BBC and international film festivals alike for his innovative style and approach.

Die Andere Seite (The Otherside) Dir. Ellie Land / 2007 / 5mins.
A beautifully pared down and poetic animated documentary about the Berlin Wall, based on East and West Berliners’ childhood imaginings of what lay on the other side.

Somebody Else’s War Dir. Guy Frankland / 2007 / 10 mins.
McKenna is a British soldier serving as part of the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo. Along with Jones and Frost – two other soldiers from his unit - he has discovered that the harsh reality of life in a war zone is more about combating boredom than fighting any tangible enemy.

The Box Dir. Richard Fenwick / 2006 / 8 mins.
The lines between reality and fiction blur as a woman discovers that there’s more to television than meets the eye! The Box is a creepy suspense story in which mundane everyday reality is subverted in inexplicable ways.

Gone Fishin’ Dir. James McAleer / 2007 / 10 mins.
When a fishing trip goes terribly wrong, Mike is left alone, drifting in the fog of the freezing North Sea. With no seafaring instinct, he must overcome his fears to find his friend and pilot the stricken vessel back to shore.

The I've Spied Book of Beards Dir. Mark Nute / 2007 / 3 mins.
Benny is a Beardspotter, one of Britain's best in fact, but one beard sighting stands between him and true greatness. Along with his faithful cameraman Chet, Benny embarks on an epic quest to find this elusive hairy legend and finish the "I've Spied Book of Beards".

Perfect to Begin Dir. Richard Lawson / 2007 / 20 mins.
Reckless boyfriend, Nav, attempts to impress new girlfriend Lisa with a surprise trip on an unplanned holiday. However, what could be the beginning of a great bonding experience for her new man and daughter, ends disastrously.

Perfect to Begin finalist in TCM Classic Shorts and to screen at London Film Festival

‘Perfect to Begin’ has been selected as one of the finalist films on TCM Classic Shorts 2007.

Directed by Richard Lawson and produced by Tina Gharavi, this High Definition short film funded by Northern Film & Media is set to create a splash at the London Film Festival.

Quote from Richard Lawson, Director: ...."The TCM Shorts Competition will be an incredibly important promotion of our film Perfect to Begin. To be a finalist will raise the films profile very quickly at a time when the film has just been finished and is at the begining of its festival life. Short films have very little money at the best of times and all the money that was there is now in the film and promotion becomes an expensive, self financed activity."

At this stage the finalist films are confirmed to screen at: The Times 51st London Film Festival as part of the TCM Classic Shorts Finalists on 25th October (NFT3 at 21:00) TCM Classic Shorts weekend on TCM - 3rd and 4th November.
